Bloodwork & a turtle!
Well, I FINALLY found time to get Addy down for bloodwork. I, too, had to get b/w done because my potassium was rather low a few weeks ago when I was in the ER (2.4 to be exact). My doc was quite concerned, so she ordered a test. Anyway, I thought "Ok, I'll have them draw mine and then we'll do Addy's, we'll be out in no time with a *little* screaming." Well, first, one of the nurses held Addy. We think we just passed her off too quickly and hse started crying so hard she was shaking. She continued to cry even when I held her. This poor nurse was a sweetheart! She actually did a few of Addy's IVs and knew who Reagan was. She was another one who *knows* us. So, I felt bad that we scared Addy to that point. They quickly stuck me and then we tried to go to a different room to calm her down hoping a change in surroundings might calm her. To no avail. The brought out a stuffed toy and Addy started to warm up to the nurse. Well, little did I know, she is too old or big for the heel pricks they used to do. So, we got the torture of searching for a vein in a 14lb baby girl!!! The male nurse (who stuck me - the female nurse held Addy), went and got the needles and they put a tourniquet on her little arm and she just whaled. They had me in a chair and then Addy in my lap. I literally had to squeeze her to keep her from moving. They found a vein in her right arm and they went to get the needle and lo and behold, the needle flew off the syringe! Addy SAW the needle and immediately started to lose it even HARDER! I looked at the nurse and went "She knows what that is...we get Synagis once a month on top of vaccinations." The nurse was shocked, but I realized she KNOWS what that needle is!! Well, the rushed to get another needle and we just knew we were going to have to do this with her screaming and shaking with all her might! I don't know how I stayed composed. Maybe just knowing this had to be done because she has had quite severe iron deficiency in the past is why. I don't know. Well, I squeezed her so she couldn't move and they squeezed her arm across my arm to lock it in place. They hit it quick and got enough and got out.. but poor baby! We sat around and talked to the nurse for a while. On our way out, they kept going "Her name just sounds familiar." I went "She was in the NICU for 2 months and she had a twin sister." They immediately went (almost in unison) "Oh, I know who she is!" It was kind of neat. I guess they both were around when the girls were born and they did their blood gases. They may of even started their initial IVs. No idea.. all I know is they know my girls and it made me feel good inside for some odd reason!
All that aside, they let her take the turtle home, which is now a new stuffed chew toy! We are certainly collecting stuffed animals, but she likes them, so I guess that's a good thing!
Here she is with her consolation prize! (She's happy now! Was NOT happy before. She shook and screamed until I got her outside. It was NOT good... NO MORE BLOODWORK WITHOUT GRANDMA IN TOW! That's FOR SURE!)

Oh, Kaycie, I am so sorry- that is one of the parts of my job I absolutely HATE!! I hate doing labs and IVs especially on pedi's when they chubby it gets harder to find a vien because they start to roll, but then on top of that you have to literally restrain them- it makes me feel so horrible- I hate being the bad guy- because they DO remember, especially when they get it done frequently- I vividly remember getting lab draws when I was a small child- and I was a nightmare getting my blood drawn up until probably junior high- not to scare you or give you a horrible glimpse into the future- my Mom worked in the same clinic where I would get my labs done- she would get so embarrassed because there was only 1 person that I would allow to touch me, and I even gave him a hard time- hopefully Addy is much better for you
